Governor’s Announcement: Anchored the boat off the coast and took a longboat back to dock. The announcement was about a missing ship, the Scarborough, which was lost off the yucatan peninsula. It has been missing for about a week. The reward is 8000 crowns. The Scarborough is a pirate ship under control of Albert de Montblanc. 200 nautical miles SSW of Port Royal. We cut the rudders of four ships and took off to where the last ship was seen.

GM’s Note: There were eight ships moored at main harbor, not including the Revenge. Skivver swam over and cut four of the ship’s rudder until he felt something underfoot. Unable to determine what it was, he assumed shark and it spooked him out of the water.

Day 1: Headed south.

Day 2: Headed south.

Day 3: Headed south. Wind is picking up, 24 knots from the E.

Day 4: Pushed E by a storm. Waiting for the storm to end. I fed the men something I found in a barrel. Wouldn’t eat it myself, but they haven’t found my stash of oranges yet.

Day 5: Winds are northerly at about 20 knots.

Day 6: Northerly wind slows to 18 knots. Our headway north is slowed by this wind. We encountered a small reef in our path, taking a northern route around it while we hope the wind changes. Ship sighted NNW flying Spanish colors. Recognized as the Diablo de Margarita. We moved the ship SSW. Slowed dramatically.

Day 7: Wind is heading NW at 15 knots. The Margarita is moving around the reef. We moved ahead of them, with a luck move to the south of the reef. We may close with them today. Killing other pirates is hard, much rather kill the ones in uniforms.

Day 8: Wind NW again, holding steady. We are coming closer to the Margarita. They started to prepare for attack. We readied our guns. We took out their sails with 3 broadside shots. They sank and we moved on.

Day 9: The wind was out the the East, and we headed down to the area the Scarborough was last seen.

Day 10: Wind was out of the NW and we headed further into the search area. Skivver sighted a ship, though we aren’t sure if it is a real one this time. Sighted off to the SW.

Day 11: Wind out of the north. Approaching the ship. No sign of life, no sails, no flag. The mojo around here is bad. We moved south. The ship was being search by men from a smaller ship on the port side of the beached ship. We began to board the beached ship and the men searching the ship came out and began to attack us. We killed them all. Of course I was deadly with my scimitar, but the others also helped a bit. We found a girl in the crow’s nest who had been there when the ship was abandoned. Her name Julie Muers, and she was captured with the ship by the french pirates. Also found a skeleton key that seems useless for anything on the ship. The name of the captain of the smaller ship was Miles Brooks and his ship was the Breeze. We took possession of the Breeze, towed the Scarboroughof the sandbar and proceeded to tow it back to Port Royal. I took the Breeze as my own and named her the Penelope.

Day 12 – 14: Fair weather, no issues. On the 14th day from port we separated from the Scarborough. Skivver and the Captain took it into Port Royal. They took it into port with a skeleton crew. The rest of us took the other two ships on to Long Bay.

Day 15 – 17: We set anchor to wait for the fallout from the meeting with the Governor. James and Iwere sure that nothing good could come from the meeting, but there was no way either of us was going to be there for it. James wants to rename the Revenge to the Reaper. I thought it was a great name. I guess we are the captains now. He can have the Reaper, I am quite taken with the Penelope. She is quite the little lady.

Day 18: This is the day of the meeting with the Governor. James and I gave the men an extra ration of rum in memory of the others. Began to debate what our next move should be. Began speaking with Miss Julie. She is desperate to get back to a port, and promised information on the key if we would get her to land. She is starting to get quite annoying, her French accent is shrill. I might need to find something to put in her mouth to get her to shut up.

GM’s Note: The meeting with the Governor didn’t go well. After being treated to a nice Dinner – Captain Angry Flint and Skivver were accused of taking something from the ship. Neither the skeleton key or Lady were mentioned. Only the Captain’s private log book was mentioned as missing.

Incomplete crew notes from rumors:

– Spanish Bishop: ?

– The Spanish Silver Route: The Spaniards seem to be using a new route to get their silver back to Europe?

Captain’s Private Log:

1 May 1717: Skivver and Captain Flint return to ship from Port Royal.Governor LawesNicholas Lawes attempted to capture them instead of paying up. Something about a missing log book missing from the Scarborough inventory. Revenge and Breeze sail mid evening toward Hispaniola. Not enough rations to last to travel anywhere further. See what the captive female wants back home. Weather clear and winds from east.

2 May 1717: Continuing West towards St Domingue. Lady Muere says her estate is in St. Marc a small sugar plantation port. Going to take her word for it, but taking no chances. Winds still favorable from the East about 12 knots. No sign of pursuit from Port Royal.

3 May 1717: Changed direction to a North West direction to head toward port. Temperature cooling a bit, wind steady from East.

4 May 1717: Ship sighted in the distance. Too far to tell merchant, pirate or warship. Wind switched from NE about 13 knots and a light foggy haze on the horizon.

5 May 1717: Attacked the merchant ship Rickets carrying sugar from Port-o-Prince to Port Royal. Took very little damage and gained 18 crew. The rest of the Ricket’s crew wanted to go down with the ship. Beautiful James stripped the Captain’s quarters for new bedding and clothes. Doesn’t look right on him, but what doesn’t? Sank the Rickets as we departed. Skivver almost blew it as the fuse was extinguished prior to gunpowder igniting. Captain Berry went down with the ship as we tied him in the crow’s nest.

7 May 1717: Docked in St Marc. No problems docking. Sold goods and the Breeze for a good payout. Sugar from Rickets didn’t get top crown, but enough to please the crew. After business completed, we headed to Julie Muere’s estate. Smaller than expected and someone had ransacked the house. Muere said she believes her nephew, Christophe may have done it to throw off the pirate Albert de Montblac. She paid us the necklace she promised, so we released her. She also stated that Christophe was the person that could have told us the whereabouts of the chest that this key unlocks. Christophe is rumored to be working with a crime lord, Soliere, in Leogane.

9 May 1717: Arrived in Leogane. Investigated some taverns for details on this Soliere or Christophe Muere. A rowdy group jumped us in the tavern. Not sure if they worked for Soliere or just picking a fight. We were approached by three finely dressed gentlemen that asked to meet with us and our boss later in the evening at Marchard de Gruyere. Believe they were asking about Teach, who we had not worked with for several months.

9 May 1717 (evening): Turned out it was a trap. A dozen armed men and Soliere’s lieutenant Grodin surrounded us and asked us to either betray our boss “Montblanc” and join Soliere or die at their hands. Not sure how they believe we work for Montblanc. They took our weapons and took us to Ville du Sucre Bienfaisant to meet with Soliere.

Met with Soliereand gave him note from Julie Muere with information about us searching for Christophe. He put us through a trust test and we had to take out six of Montblanc’s men. Skivver did go down but Soliere’s medical men stabilized him.

We accepted Soliere’s offer to join him and it gave us free access to Christophe Muere. Finally some answers – Muere told us about the chest. Montblanc had given it to a pirate name Bullhead Willows for watching over a prisoner. Bullhead got bored of babysitting and is trying to find a way to open the cursed chest. Muere also gave us a map showing the location of Hell’s Cove, where Willows will more than likely be found.

Captains Log 5-1-2010

First off, the group was prepping to head to Hell’s Cove after a discussion with Christopher Muere. He informed the group that the skeleton key in their possession was for a treasure chest to be found with Bullhead Willows. Muere gave the group a simple map that shows the location of Hell’s Cove on the Yucatan.

As the PCs are preparing the ship to leave, Soliere asks to come on board and have a chat with the group. He tells the group how he misses his days of being a pirate and gives them specific directions on how to enter Hell’s Cove. The directions were deceptively easy – Head straight towards a ship wrecked Dutch vessel called the Groene Draeck, Then tack a 45 degree angle and they will see the opening.

He then wishes the group well and departs. A few minutes after his departure, a commotion breaks out topside. The group heads up and see a group of strangers attacking their crew. After Beautiful James slits the throat of one attacker, Skivver takes out a few, and Angry Finnegan almost gets taken down, they finally repel the attackers and get underway.

The Revenge takes a western route to the Yucatan with very little issues. Even the trip past Port Royal was uneventful even though a ship was sighted leaving port as they passed.

Once they get close to where Hell’s Cove may be located, they spot an English merchant ship listing to the port side. They crew decide to see what booty they can obtain. Captain Edward Nerrington was interested in parlaying and wanted nothing to do with battle. He had lost a good portion of his crew and lost some of his cargo. He offers the PCs 1,500 gold crowns to just let him be. Skivver throws over a grappling hook. The captain who wanted the Pirates to stay on their own ship.

While the discussion goes on, a 3rd ship comes from the south to join the activity. The Dolor De Santo Domingo, a spanish Pirate, wants in on some of the action. He begins to attack the starboard side of the Revenge.

Back on the Hanby Rose, the captain tells the pirate crew that if they take the ropes back he will throw the bags of gold over. The captain did not have as much gold as he promised and the crew only received 900 gold and 300 lead pieces. The two ships ended up separating and the Revenge goes after the Santa Domingo.

A some very accurate cannon shots, the front end of the Santa Domingo is blown apart and a boarding party ensues. Skivver ends up confronting Captain Rodrigo Incarnacion in a one on one battle. The clashing of weapons occurs and as the Captain begins to run Skivver shoots him in the leg as he jumps off the side of the ship. Skivver then grabs a musket rifle and rolls a natural 20 and take the captain’s head out as he swims towards a life raft.

After the clean up of the ships and the total destruction of the Hanby Rose, the Revenge finds Hell’s Cove and docks. After several conversations at Hell’s Cove, it is determined that Bullhead Willows had obtained a rare map of an uncharted Aztec island knows as Rigas Island and was seeking out a witch doctor to break the “curse” on the treasure check that the group hold the key for. They meet up with Paolo, Willow’s first mate who was left behind as Willows left in a hurry to find Rigas Island.

Paolo tells the group that Willows does have the chest and is trying to find someone to remove the curse so he can open it up. He also tells the group that Willows has a prisoner that he thinks is the Governor of Port Royal.

As the group head back to their ship to leave, they contact Chief Gustavo to off load some of the cargo to store/sell. After making contact, they then are confronted by Adrian Locke and surrounded by twelve others. Locke and his group are part of Montblanc’s crew and they are asking for the treasure chest key. The group back up and escape, while the local militia of Hell’s Cove show up and scatter Montblanc’s men.

The group gets underway and as they depart the tunnel a ship is awaiting them outside. Montblanc stands on the aftcastle and says “Gentlemen, this is where it ends. Surrender now or Die!” and finishes with the eruption of all cannons from his ship.

Captain Log 5-23-10

The officers on board were in possession of a key that opens a treasure chest known to be in the hands of a pirate named Bullhead Willows, who has left Hell’s Cove, a pirate hideout on the Mexican Coast. Willows is known to be heading south towards uncharted Rigas Island. Willows believes that the chest he carries is cursed and that a witch doctor on the Rigas Island can remove the curse. In earliest sessions, the crew found a journal that shows something fishy between the current Governor of Port Royal and a deal between the French Pirate, Albert de Montblanc. Montblanc was tasked to watch a hostage for the Governor and turned the hostage over Bullhead as well as leaving the reward chest with Willows. The crew show up a Hell’s Cove just as Willows was leaving and hooked up with Willow’s first mate Paolo, who joins them with a map to Rigas Island.

Prior to the ship getting underway, Captain Angry Finnegan met a special lady, who happens to have a room for rent by the hour and he decides to stay behind and comfort his new lady friend in her time of need. The crew takes a vote and elect Skivver as the new captain.

The Revenge then heads out of Hell’s Cove to seek down Bullhead Willows and locate the chest. As soon as they exit the cavern, Montblanc aboard the Vermillion shouts out – “Gentlemen, this is where it ends. Surrender now or die!” and launches a full salvo of cannons upon the Revenge. The inertia of the Revenge and the closeness of the Vermillion does not give the crew much of a chance to manuerver and line up a good shot. The crew of the Vermillion cast 4 lines over and succesfully attach 3 lines and begins to close the gap between the two ships. Captain Skivver shouts to the crew to open all sails fully that they were going to drag the Vermillion behind them. As the Revenge gained speed, the slow moving Vermillion is forced to change directions as the lines continue to close the distance. The crew of the Revenge cast over their lines and successfully and begin tying down the Vermillion as the boarding planks are dropped into place.

Three crew men from the Vermillion swing over on the ropes, with one of them over-estimating the length falls in the water and gets crushed between the vessels. Safara, the African ex-slave runs over on the boarding plank and slips as the wave splashes up between the ships and he barely hangs onto the plank while the battle ensues.

The boardings continue with a major battle between Captain Skivver and Captain Montblanc with a fierce sword fight concludes with Beautiful James jabbing his sword throug Montblanc’s chest and kicking him, which sent him over the side. Skivver and James got in a heated discussion because Skivver wanted something from Montblanc.

After a search of the ship, the following items were discovered: 2 Masterwork Dueling Rapiers, 3 Masterwork Daggers, 3 Masterwork Blunderbuss Pistols, 3,200 silver and a deed to a small plantation on Jamaica that James found.

The officers decided to keep the Vermillion since it was a larger and faster ship and took the Revenge back into Hell’s Cove and discussed with Chief Gustov and arrange the sale of the Revenge. Any details of the sale will be completed through Angry Finnegan (who might be Happy Finegan at this point). The sale of the Revenge did take place and sold for 8,000 gold crowns, which was a decent amount for a ship in as such of a poor shape after the recent activity. Captain Vance and Chief Gustov approved very much of the previous dealings and the abiity to withhold violence while inside Hell’s Cove and they helped barter a better deal.

The Vermillion then got underway and encountered a severe storm. They set anchor and rode out the storm, only losing one crew member overboard and taking light damage to their ship. They then completed their trip south and came to Rigas Island. About 400 yards north of the land, the crew discovered a damaged vessel, which turned out to be the Majestic (the ship that Willows was captain of) and it was stripped of all provisions, weapons, and supplies. The officers did come across a journal that said Captain Willows spotted some natives and wanted to go ashore and meet them. They seemed “friendly”

Four officers and 10 crew men go ashore and look around some deserted huts, with the only suspicious thing being a pair of waist-high stones with spiral patterns etched in them. The crew also found a large discarded net that looks too large for fishing and must be for larger game. The crew then starts to head inland follow the trails of feet and dragging equipment from the appearance of it. They are surrounded by a group of barely clothed natives armed with clubs and easily dispatch of them. As the crew heads further inland, they discover a fishing village with around 30 adults. The crew pretty much slaughter the villages save 1 barely clad female that Skivver ties up on a post to come back for.

Beautiful James discovers scraps of clothess, European trinkets and a fire pyre with the remains of humans in it. James almost trips over a barely alive crewman off the the Majestic. The crewman tells James that the natives are wicked beasts and are not to be trusted. They were led by a witch doctor or priest of some kind. He tells James that they took him (as in Willows), the chest and the rest of the crew inland to the jungle. And points to a trail as dying.

The decision is made to send the ship around to closer cove and bring reinforcements. As they crew heads over to the cove, some black smoke is spotted in the general direction that the now dead crewman had told James. James and the crew continue heading to the cove to meet up with the ship, while Skivver heads to the burning smoke to see what it is. The smoke was coming from a fire pit in a makeshift encampent outside of the forest. No one is sighted and it is nearing dark, so Skivver heads back to meet up with the ship. However, Skivver does notice a trail heading into the deep forest.

The next day, the group returns to the encampment and find Bullhead Willows, Nicholas Lawes (the real Governor of Port Royal, who was also the hostage) and two other men who are so beat up that they can’t move on their own. Willows shows the crew a drawing in one of the tents that indicates a temple to the south at the base of Moutn Tulcan. He states that he has had enough of the chest and is ready to head out, but Captain Skivver asks that he remains if he wants a ride for his remaining crew. Captain Skivver sends a small group with the Governor back to the ship for safe keeping (and possible ransom) and the rest being their trek to this temple.

The crew reach the Golden Temple has a pair of gold snake statues and gold plating around the entire 150 feet long structure. $$ are showing up in the eyes of Beautiful James. A couple of crew men finally get the large stone doors open and are attacked by a large number of cultist. The crew finally defeat a group in the main entrance and slowly enter the building. They find a large snake statue expelling lava from it’s mouth. The crew moves onto one section of the lower floor and enounter another group with a couple of priest carrying poison throwing knives (1d4 normal and 1d4 poison every round) and poison laced blades on their maquahuitl (1d6+2 normal attack, 1d4 poison every round if fort save fails) (aztec bladed club). When attempting to clear one area, Beautiful James and Skiiver throw a small powder keg and exploded it in a room full of cultist and basically explode every person with 20 feet of it.

This alerts a group of 20 cultist from upstairs and large scale batter ensues, where the cultist are all defeated and only a handfull of the 30 crewman are alive and standing. Now that the area is silent, faint drumbeats are heard coming from upstairs. The remaining crew head upstairs and the drums get louder. Skivver peeks the door open to see a couple of priests chanted in front of naked male crewmen (noted because of his lighter skin), seven tied naked women, and a dozen or so other people in the chamber. The decision is made to roll a powder keg towards the one side and it worked completely and blows up about 6 cultist. The women begin screaming and the one of the priests chops the head of the male sacrifce. One of the crew shoots a priest and he falls to his knees and both priest are chanting louder and louder now. The women continue to scream louder as they notice a orangish tint coming from the oozing blood of the headless corpse.

The crew begin to fight the rest cultist and don’t see the bubling lava coming up from the blood on the floor. As the cultist are defeated, the crew run to get the chest and a lava has formed into the shape of a large man. The god Tulcan has risen from the blood and begins to launch lava balls at the nearest crewmen. He hits one of the crewmen carrying the chest and his shirt material catches on fire causing him to drop the chest. Skivver yells at him to pick up and run and they begin to move again.

Beautiful James at the first sight of the lava god runs and rigs the final powder keg up to the entrance door and quickly departs the premise. The volcano has also began expelling lava and causing earthquakes all over the island.

Skivver and the other crewman are running down the stairs and see lava coming from the ceiling forming into a manshape in front of them. They get out of the entrance just in time as it blows the door frame down with just enough of an opening that the crewman last in line see the lava coming through the cracks.

They return safely to the Vermillion and head out escaping the island, while they hear faint screams of the last remaining woman tied to the post where Skivver left her.

This was the final session of this chapter in the Pirate’s Tale. There are still some outstanding things that could be picked up at a later time such as the return of the Governor. He has offered 1,000 to every officer for his safe return back to Port Royal and what to do with Bullhead and Paolo.

The chest was opening with the key and the following items were found in it:

32,000 gold 4 ornate jewled ivory combs worth 500 gold each a set of ivory pipers worth 500 gold a pouch of fine tobacco worth 50 gold a silver flute worth 250 gold a gold and silver St Christopher’s cross worth 2,000 gold.

And Beautiful James found a small vile containing what appears dessicated bony finger, also known as the Finger of St Anthony the Abbot (gives a +1 bonus to all saving throws).

Thanks for letting me GM this. I had a blast GMing and I hope you had as much fun playing.
